Donations More Than Double Grant Pool Available to Local Organizations

In the past year, Kentuckians, through their donations, have more than doubled the amount of money available to local history organizations, museums, libraries and other groups through the Kentucky Local History Trust Fund (LHTF).

The fund provides grants of up to $1,500 to such groups for local history education programs, collections care, local history publication or other media products and exhibits, among other things. The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will take applications for the next grant cycle through Oct. 13.

One recipient from the first grant pool, Highlands Museum and Discovery Center in Ashland, has improved the lifespan of its collection through its $1,000 LHTF grant. The museum used its grant to provide museum-standard storage for its collection. “A museum cannon exist without artifacts, so securing the safety of our items also secures our sustainability,” wrote Heather Akers, curator and facilities director, in her final grant report to KHS.
