Critical Race Theory in Kentucky: What is it and why is it the "Bogeyman" in the classroom?

Panel discussion with moderator Dr. Andrew Rosa, Associate Professor, History, WKU; Dr. Jeffrey Budziak, Assistant Dean, Political Science; Dr. Sophia Arjana, Associate Professor, History and Dr. Amy Cappiccie, Professor, Social Work. Panelists will introduce and discuss Critical Race Theory and why the flurry of bills, resolutions, and other legislative actions have sparked debates over the role of teaching race in America. Panelists will reflect on whether the "problem" of Critical Race Theory truly exists in the classroom and the origins of these political movements to control school curriculum.

KHS helped Shelby County celebrate their America 250KY event by bringing the 1792 Kentucky State Constitution and Constitution Journals to the Shelby County Historical Society.

Carroll County - July 27, 2024
The Port William Historical Society celebrated Pioneer Day at the historic Masterson House. They also helped to spread the word about the America 250KY commemoration and resources offered by the Kentucky Historical Society to Kentucky communities.

Franklin County - Kentucky Historical Society - September 14, 2024
KHS celebrated the Commonwealth’s 240th anniversary of our Constitutional Convention with the kick-off of America’s Constitution Week. Guests viewed the original 1792 Kentucky Constitution and participated in hands-on activities! Tours were offered at our three campus sites.
Special Guest: Michael W. McConnell, presented "Constitution in the Judicial System." McConnell is a Richard and Frances Mallery Professor, Director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

The Battle at Blue Licks - Kentucky Gateway Museum
October 1, 2024, 1:00 - 2:15 pm ET
Matthew Dollar, Park Ranger at Blue Licks Battlefield, will discuss one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War in Kentucky. Although the main British Army under Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown in October 1781, virtually ending the war in the east, fighting on the western frontier continued. It would be the last battle that Native Americans and the British would win.

To Tea or Not to Tea: A Tax on Tea Party - Kentucky Gateway Museum

Black Material Culture at the Kentucky Museum
October 15, 2024, 5-6:00 PM (CST)
Black Material Culture with Dr. Tiffany Momon, Assistant Professor, University of the South. This talk will focus on Dr. Momon's community-based historic preservation projects with Black Craftspeople Digital Archive, a black digital humanities project that centers black craftspeople, their lives, and their contributions to the making and building of America. The talk will engage with how black craftspeople are identified and researched in the historical record and how institutions are adjusting their curatorial practices to better collect, preserve, and engages with this history. Dr. Momon is the founder and co-director of the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive and has worked with organizations such as the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Winterthur Museum and Gardens, and the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum.
