Early Catholic settlers came to Rolling Fork area after 1790 and established Calvary Settlement. Among those buried in the Catholic cemetery, later renamed Holy Mary, are Revolutionary War soldiers, originally from Maryland: John Barton Abell, Henry Hudson Wathen, and Benedict Spalding. Another soldier-settler, Samuel Abell IV, died 1795, before cemetery created.
