In Sept. 1862, Confederates moved supply depot here from Lexington. After battle of Perryville, Oct. 8, CSA gathered here for council of war, Oct. 11. USA destroyed food sources. Oct. 13, under command of Gen. Braxton Bragg, retreat began in two columns under Generals Polk and Smith. With immaterial loss, they moved thru Cumberland Gap, Oct. 19-24. See map over.
