Union teacher earns 2019 Kentucky History Teacher of the Year award
Doug Logan, a teacher at Cooper High School in Union, has been named the 2019 Kentucky History Teacher of the Year. The award is presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to honor exceptional history teachers in grades K-12. Logan says his teaching is driven by passion, content knowledge, context and the belief that he is doing what he was called to do. "His engaging teaching methods – which include everything from guest speakers to donning historic costumes – encourage students to ask questions that lead to critical thinking in and out of the classroom," added Claire Gwaltney, KHS's Teacher Programs Manager and administrator of the History Teacher of the Year program in Kentucky. Logan received his master’s in American History at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, in 2010. He has been teaching since 2003 at both the middle and high school levels. In addition to a $1,000 honorarium, Logan’s school will receive history books and Gilder Lehrman educational materials. Logan will be recognized during the Kentucky History Awards, presented by KHS in November.
