Make Your Mark for Kentucky History

Check the box and support local history!

Since 2016, 63 organizations in 42 counties have received over $141,000 in support from the Kentucky Local History Trust Fund. The Kentucky Historical Society administers the program, where Kentuckians check a box on their Kentucky income tax returns to designate a portion of their refund into a grant pool. The program helps museums and other history organizations across the state with projects such as artifact conservation, digitization of photo collections, organizational strategic planning and implementation, educational program planning and implementation, and more. This program is an excellent opportunity for individuals to give back to their community and support local history groups.

Nearly 400 organizations across the state preserve and interpret Kentucky's diverse and important history. Heritage tourism is essential to Kentucky and contributes $13 billion directly and indirectly to the state's economy. Local history groups play a significant role in creating this economic value. They tell our stories, spark conversations, and create transformative experiences for visitors. They help us find meaning from our shared past and provide insight into our current time. They preserve and protect our historic assets. Without them, much of the state's history would be lost and forgotten.

The Kentucky Local History Trust Fund supports sites and organizations to ensure their long-term sustainability. You can contribute to this fund by donating on your state tax return. Your donation will be added to a pool of grant funds for these organizations, helping them fulfill their missions and enhance our communities. It is crucial to support these organizations as they play a significant role in preserving our heritage and generating economic value for our state. Please donate to the Kentucky Local History Trust Fund and help them continue their work.
