Deadline Nears for Historical Marker Applications

Organizations, individuals or communities that want to apply for a historical marker through the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) have until March 1 to submit their applications as part of the first round for 2016. One of the Kentucky Historical Society’s most popular programs, last year KHS installed 33 historical markers throughout Kentucky on topics ranging from community development to educational institutions and transportation milestones. There are more than 2,400 markers statewide. Each marker started with local interest and an application. “A historical marker is an excellent way to commemorate the history of your community by recognizing historical sites, events or persons that have had a significant impact on your community and the Commonwealth,” said Becky Riddle, marker program coordinator. Information and applications are online (select “How to apply for a historical marker”). People who have questions can email Becky Riddle. The deadline for the second 2016 marker application round is Sept. 1. KHS administers the Kentucky Historical Marker Program in cooperation with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
