Catholic converts Henrietta Cleveland and Sarah Peter, with Bishop George Carrell, founded St. Elizabeth Hospital on this site in Jan. 1861. The Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis converted a vacant grocery store to serve those in need, including Civil War soldiers, slaves, & orphans. St. E marked 150 years in 2011.
