During the American Revolutionary War period there were a variety of flags that evolved to inspire and lead our fledgling country into war and independence. The flags were colorful with each having a purpose and a meaning. The Louisville Thruston Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution Historical Flag program describes and explains the history of these colonial flags that had an impact on our American history. The flags we usually go through include: Join or Die, Loyal Nine, Sons of Liberty, Grand Union, George Washington Headquarters, Hopkinson, Star Spangled Banner, Continental, Appeal to Heaven, Serapis, Betsy Ross, Gadsen, George Rogers Clark, Trumbull and Old Glory. Flags are usually tied to historical events, so we tie in the event and the purpose of the flag.
