Visitor Services Associate
Adecco is currently looking for a Visitor Services Associate. The Visitor Services Associate will work to fulfill the Kentucky Historical Society's mission and help colleagues throughout the organization succeed. The position plays an integral part on the Visitor Services team. The Visitors Services Associate serves as an initial point of contact with members of the Society and visitors of the Kentucky History Center and Museums. This position is cross-trained to serve in all KHS guest services areas – the 1792 Gift Store, admission desks at The Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, the Kentucky Old State Capitol, and the Kentucky Military History Museum, and with KHS rentals and special events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greet visitors
- Sell tickets, merchandise, and memberships at museum reception desks, collect payments by accepting cash, check, or charge payments from customers, and make change for cash customers
- Balance cash drawer by counting cash at the beginning and end of a work shift
- Merchandise sales at 1792 Gift Store
- Answer telephone and direct calls to appropriate KHS staff
- Assist with special or rental events setups
- Provide information/directions to visitors of the Kentucky History Center and Museums on meeting locations, museums, and restroom locations
- Work as a member of the Visitors Services Team alongside other KHS teams to provide quality experiences for the Kentucky History Center and Museums visitors
- Provide a positive customer experience with fair, friendly, and courteous service
Qualifications:
Education/Experience – High school diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) year experience in customer service, retail, or clerical duties.
Communication – Ability to work with the Visitors Services team but also independently on several projects concurrently and must enjoy working with the general public and school groups/children.
Computer/Other Skills – Basic computer skills, including internet, word processing, spreadsheets, and email. Point of Sale Altru database system experience a plus. Must be able to answer, transfer, and operate a multi-line phone system and return calls to guests promptly. Must be able to run a point-of-sale system, process credit card payments, and successfully balance cash drawer by counting cash at the beginning and end of a work shift.
Special Requirements – This is a part-time position with a work schedule of Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm with a 30-minute lunch. This position must be able to work occasional weeknight, Mondays, or holidays to provide for the needs of KHS. Saturdays and holidays that KHS is open are REQUIRED. Hours are subject to change.
Working Conditions:
- Work Environment: This position shall work at reception desks at the Kentucky History Center and Museums or in the gift store on a rotating basis
- Physical Demands: May be required to lift or move carts of materials and gift store products. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods. May occasionally ascend/descend stepladder for placement/removal of gift store sales products.

Pay Details: $12.50 per hour

CWGK Editorial Assistant
The Kentucky Historical Society’s (KHS) Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition (CWGK), with support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), seeks an engaging and collaborative historian/editor to join us in helping Kentuckians better understand and interpret the lives of ordinary people during the Civil War Era. The Editorial Assistant will join an editorial team that provides free, digital access to more than 10,000 documents about Kentucky’s Civil War, available at http://discovery.civilwargovernors.org/ (if you are unable to access the site, please clear your cache browsing history and try again). The Editorial Assistant will have the ability to leverage their skills as a historian and editor to forge new interpretations of Kentucky in the throes of civil strife. Their work will promote the larger edition and support the creation of new interpretive materials for educators, scholars, and the public.
Working with CWGK, as well as the larger Research and Publications team at KHS, the Editorial Assistant supports the organization’s mission to make history relevant for modern audiences. As an innovative leader in the field of documentary editing and Civil War history, CWGK has helped inspire similar projects in Mississippi and Alabama. To sustain the project’s larger contributions to Kentucky, the Editorial Assistant will work on transcribing documents and building annotated biographies. They will join a vibrant network of history professionals committed to providing users with diverse stories about the Civil War Era, allowing them to wield their research and editorial skills to better inform the public.

This position is supported by funding from the NHPRC and is contingent upon funding availability on a year-to-year basis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the CWGK team in the performance of its forward-thinking editorial work making critical resources available to public audiences within and beyond Kentucky
- Locate, identify, and image relevant documents in repositories in Kentucky or other states
- Conduct transcription work and editorial mark-up of documents
- Research, annotate, and review biographies of entities found within CWGK documents
- Produce promotional pieces and educational resources built from CWGK items
Minimum Requirements:
- EDUCATION: A master’s degree in U.S. History or related humanities field required. Advanced graduate training in those fields and/or editorial or experience with digital humanities project experience preferred.
- EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, or SKILLS: Must possess a superior understanding of U.S. history, including, but not limited to, Kentucky history, the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras, Southern history, and public history. Familiarity with research methods and practices in nineteenth century U.S. History, including manuscript collections, newspapers, census data, and genealogical resources expected. Experience with digital humanities projects preferred.

- SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency with Omeka, FromThePage, or other online platforms preferred; Familiarity with research platforms such as Ancestry and Fold3 preferred; understanding of XML/TEI coding and editorial experience preferred. Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions:
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to move office equipment occasionally that may weigh up to 25lbs. Must be able to remain in a stationary position and move about the office and program venues for long periods.
- WORK SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position with a work schedule of Monday-Friday. This position must be able to work occasional weeknight, weekend, or holiday to provide for the needs of KHS in its programming and services for its museum and special event guests.
- LOCATION: Incumbents working in this position perform duties in a museum office setting. In- and out-of-state travel may be required.
Probationary Period: This job has an initial probationary period of six (6) months.
