New Research Fellows’ Topics Include Appalachian Youth Activism, WWI Home Front

The year is winding down and the holidays fast approaching, but research is ramping up at the Kentucky Historical Society. In the coming months, the new fall 2017 group of KHS research fellows will use the society’s wide-ranging archival collections to tackle new projects.

Fall 2017 KHS Research Fellows are:

• Daniel Burge, University of Alabama, “A Struggle against Fate: The Opponents of Manifest Destiny and the Collapse of the Continental Dream, 1846-1871”
• Tammy Clemons, University of Kentucky, “Exploring Youth Activism in Different Generations in Appalachia”
• Joshua Jeffery, University of Tennessee, “‘The Whole Trouble Lies in Religion’: A Case Study of War Resistance and Social Control during World War I”
• Adam MacPharlain, Cincinnati Art Museum, “Churchill Weavers Collection”

“The new projects from our fellows not only speak to the depth of KHS collections, but their research also illustrates the importance of history in understanding current issues,” said Stephanie Lang, coordinator of the KHS Research Fellowship program. The KHS Research Fellowship Program supports the outstanding research of senior and emerging scholars, including doctoral students, from a wide-range of academic backgrounds. As part of the program, researchers have access to an impressive array of KHS archival and material collections, engage in thoughtful discussions regarding scope of work while in residency, and are connected to additional area repositories, historic sites and organizations.
