New Historical Marker Remembers First Woman Elected to Kentucky Senate

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) dedicated a new historical marker that remembers the first woman to serve in the Kentucky Senate on April 16 near the Simpson County courthouse on West Cedar Street in Franklin, Kentucky.

Carolyn (Carrie) Conn Moore was elected to the Kentucky Senate by special election in 1949 to fill her husband’s unexpired term. The Logan County native was married to J. Lee Moore, who died while serving the 5th Senatorial District.

Carrie’s interest focused on education and social welfare. She was a lifelong advocate of parental involvement in children’s education and worked for various educational organizations, serving as vice president of the Kentucky Congress of Parents and Teachers. After completing her Kentucky Senate term, she took a job with Democratic National Headquarters. She died in 1986 at age 82.

More than 2,400 historical markers statewide tell Kentucky’s history. KHS administers the Kentucky Historical Marker Program in cooperation with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
