KOHC Awards Grants to Two Oral History Projects
KOHC AWARDS GRANTS TO TWO ORAL HISTORY PROJECTS
Administered by the Kentucky Historical Society, The Kentucky Oral History Commission grant program offers funding, equipment, and training grants to assist amateur or professional oral historians with oral history research projects on topics of particular significance to Kentucky. These grants encourage statewide participation in the collection and preservation of historically valuable interviews.
The Kentucky Oral History Commission met recently and awarded the following grants:
“Our Land of Promise” – Black Heritage in Berea, Kentucky project will focus on collecting oral history narrations from the descendants and residents of Berea, Kentucky concerning Black Heritage in Berea with a concentration on African American hamlets (Farristown, Bobtown, and Middletown) and their forgotten history.
Kentucky Heartwood Oral History Project will include interviews with 10-15 individuals connected to the organization Kentucky Heartwood, a forest watch group dedicated to protecting the environmental integrity of public land in Kentucky since 1991. The purpose of these interviews is to collect stories about environmental activism in Kentucky over the past 30 years and the involvement of citizens in the management of public lands.
About the Kentucky Oral History Commission
The Kentucky Historical Society houses the Kentucky Oral History Commission (KOHC), the only state commission in the nation committed to statewide oral history documentation through granting programs and outreach. KOHC reaches across the state to record and preserve the diverse stories that make up Kentucky’s rich and colorful history.
Since 1976 KOHC has:
- Awarded over $1 million to more than 600 individuals, colleges, universities, and community organizations, resulting in the collection of more than 35,000 interviews in repositories throughout the state.
- Secured nearly 10,000 interviews within the KHS Collection, making it one of the largest in the U.S.
