KHS Provides Rare Opportunity to See 'Graveyard Quilt'
Frankfort, Ky, (October 20, 2016) One of the Kentucky Historical Society’s most popular, seldom-displayed items will be on exhibit in the exhibit “A Kentucky Journey” through Dec. 31.
The “graveyard quilt,” by Elizabeth Roseberry Mitchell, dates to 1843 and memorializes family members who had died, including a toddler son, John Vanetta, and a 19-year-old son, Matthais.
The quilt shows 19th century mourning customs and is an example of quilting as an emotional outlet for women.
Visit the exhibit Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Starting Nov. 11, KHS also will be open on some Fridays until 9 p.m. through December, as well as Sunday, Dec. 18, 1 p.m.-5 p.m., for a special Holiday History Train Display. More information is on our calendar of events.
Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for kids 6-18; and $3 for veterans. Admission is free for children 5 and under, and KHS and KJHS members.
