KHS, Lexington History Museum Provide Free HistoryMobile Visits
Five Fayette County middle schools will have the Kentucky Historical Society’s HistoryMobile visit free of charge, thanks to a partnership between KHS and the Lexington History Museum.
KHS and Lexington History Museum made the opportunity available to all middle schools in the county and selected the first five to apply.
Recipients are:
- Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary School
- Lexington Christian Academy
- Lexington University Academy
- Providence Montessori Middle School
- Trinity Christian Academy
“We are delighted to be able to extend our education outreach by providing the HistoryMobile to Fayette County students,” said Jim Dickinson, chair of the museum board of trustees.
The HistoryMobile carries the exhibit “Torn Within and Threatened Without: Kentucky in the Civil War Era.” When students visit, they learn history through the stories of eight Kentuckians, real people who had to make difficult choices about war and slavery. But more than that, they get to immerse themselves into the story. Touchscreens allow students to select what they would do if they were faced with the same possible courses of action that these real-life people faced.
“The Kentucky Historical Society is pleased to partner with the Lexington History Museum to make our HistoryMobile available to these Fayette County schools,” said Kent Whitworth, KHS executive director. “This collaboration reinforces the fact that the impact of museums goes far beyond their literal walls. This history-based experience also provides students a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and to better understand the challenges of people who went before them.”
The visits will take place this school year, starting this fall. They are not open to the public.
