State Street United Methodist Church - Reverend Andrew Monroe, a circuit rider, conducted the first Methodist service in Warren County in 1809 at a local tavern. By 1819, a Methodist Society held meetings at a home on Center Street. In 1820, the first church was constructed and pastored by Reverend Benjamin Moore. In 1842, a larger church was built on State Street.

Reverse Description:

State Street United Methodist Church - In late 1844, the Methodist Church split into northern and southern factions because of slavery. Known as the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from 1844-1939, this church built the current Romanesque- Revival structure in 1895 from Warren Co. limestone. It adopted its current name in 1968 when the Evangelical United Brethren Church united with the Methodist Church.
