Colonel Richard Henderson of the Transylvania Land Company hired Daniel Boone to establish a trail from Long Island to the Holston River (near present-day Kingsport, Tn.) to a site on the Ky. River (that became Ft. Boonesborough). The trail, which ran for nearly 200 miles, became known as Boone Trae, named in honor of Daniel Boone.
Reverse Description:
When Boone's party reached here, they found an opening in the 'knobs,' the hills that compromise the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Called Boone Gap, the settlers blazed the Boone Trace through the passage, which gave them access to the 'Plains of Ky.' and land farther west. Completed in 1775, Boone Trace was the first settlers' route into Ky.
