Rare Book Cataloger
Brenda catalogs rare publications in KHS’s collections, entering information about them into our online catalog. Her greatest pleasure on the job is when a library patron requests an obscure pamphlet or book that she has cataloged and finds information in it that aids their research. Many of these items are available only at KHS and are in fragile condition or missing publishing information, so the quality of the online catalog record is extremely important to researchers.
Her previous career as a cartographer at Rand McNally & Co. helps her daily while comparing catalog records with original items. Both fields require a high level of attention to detail, so transitioning from cartography into cataloging was easy, she says. The Kentucky history part is just an added bonus for her, especially cataloging some of the mid-19th century political pamphlets.
