Food for Thought: PTSD and Civil War Veterans
Lt. Robert Buffum, a Medal of Honor recipient, brought the Civil War home with him. Alcoholism, domestic violence and legal trouble led him to be jailed, hospitalized and to commit suicide.
Buffum knew the war caused what today we would call PTSD, but he never regretted his service. Dr. Patrick Lewis will use Buffum’s example to explore the psychological effects of the war on its veterans.
