MLK Day Celebration

The Kentucky Historical Society is marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special Monday hours and activities for all ages designed to celebrate King’s legacy, explore African American contributions to Kentucky history, encourage community service and promote peace.

KHS, including the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library, will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular admission applies.

Special activities and events are scheduled to occur at the following times:

10 am.: Craft: Share a Good Deed through a Painted Kentucky (while supplies last)

10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.: Community Engagement Fair

11 a.m.: Hearn Elementary School Choir

Noon:  Bridgeport Elementary School Choir

1 p.m.: Franklin County High Soul Steppin’ Flyers

1 – 3 p.m.: Family Workshop: Standing Up and Speaking Out – Civil Rights Leaders  (Must pre-register for this workshop. Click link for details.)

1:30 p.m.: Old State Capitol tour*

3 p.m.: Old State Capitol tour*

*Tours begin at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History; please check in at the Visitor Services desk.

In Keeneland Gallery:

Exhibit opening: “Photographing Freetowns: African American Kentucky through the Lens of Helen Balfour Morrison, 1935-1946”: This adaptation of the Chicago Newberry Library’s exhibit of the same name features a collection of Morrison’s photographs documenting African American life in Depression-era Kentucky. Her work reveals the dignity, independence and strength of the close-knit descendants of the freedmen who settled these towns in the decades following the Civil War. The exhibit will run through Oct. 20.

In “A Kentucky Journey” Exhibit (children’s activities):

  • African Americans in Kentucky Slide Show (center of gallery)
  • Investigation Station: Garrett Morgan, African American Inventor
  • Make-and-Take Civil Rights Buttons (center of gallery)

In Commonwealth Hall (all ages):
