What’s Your Food Story?
The Kentucky Oral History Commission (KOHC) is commemorating “The Year of Kentucky Food” with the Kentucky Foodways Oral History Project.
KOHC wants to collect oral histories of past and present food traditions in Kentucky and to involve people all over the commonwealth in the project—as interviewers and interview subjects. Completed interviews will be part of the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) collections.
“I hope to see this topic interpreted very broadly,” said Sarah Schmitt, oral history administrator.
According to Schmitt, the goal is to give KHS a collection that explores a wide range of topics such as traditional canning and preserving, confronting modern food deserts, making quintessential Kentucky recipes, and understanding the influences of various cultures on food in Kentucky.
Any Kentucky resident, age 18 or older, who is interested in conducting an interview, should submit a proposal to KOHC by July 15. Applicants will receive notification of selection on Aug. 15; completed interviews are due by Nov. 30. Selected applicants will receive an honorarium upon the successful submission of their oral history interview and required paperwork.

KOHC, administered by the Kentucky Historical Society, reaches across the commonwealth to record and preserve the diverse stories that are a part of Kentucky’s rich and colorful history.
