Kentucky History Education Conference

This annual summer conference explores an American history topic with Kentucky connections. General and concurrent sessions provide content, resources and classroom applications.


July 11, 2013 KHEC Conference Theme: Rights and Responsibilities in History
Come hear Kentucky's premier historians as they lead historical content sessions focused on rights and responsibilites in America's history. In addition to a keynote lunch address, by Dr. Gerald Smith, professor of African American and civil rights history at the University of Kentucky, concurrent sessions on primary source activities and instructional strategies will be offered by teacher peers.

The cost of the conference, which includes lunch, refreshments and teacher materials, is $50, or $45 for KHS, Kentucky Association for Teachers of History and Kentucky Council for Social Studies members. A special rate of $35 is available for pre-service teachers.

Early Kentucky: Rights and Responsibilities in a New Land
In addition, again this year KHS is offering a field study bus tour the following day, Friday, July 12, 2013, to historic sites associated with Early Kentucky history. This unique professional development day includes entertaining and educational stops at Fort Boonesborough, and Old Fort Harrod. Cost for the field study bus tour is $80.00 for early registration (before May 15) or $100.00 after May 15, 2013. Read more about last year's trip on the KHS blog, History Burgoo.

KHS's education staff will travel to districts across the state to provide one to three-hour teacher workshops on the following topics:

How to Find and Use Local History Resources
