Candlelight Tour 2012A Civil War ChristmasEach year during downtown Frankfort's Candlelight Tour, the KHS history campus is open free to the public for three days, with additional special events and activities for families!

Thursday, Nov. 8
5 p.m. – 9 p.m.
• Compare the differences of Christmas celebrations between families at home in the 1860s and soldiers in an encampment.
• Meet Abraham Lincoln (
Kentucky Humanities Council's Jim Sayre) and a Civil War soldier – ask them what life was like at that time or have a photograph taken with them.
• Participate in period dancing (with Don and Sylvia Coffey) and sample period food and drink (gingerbread and wassail).
• Christmas trees at that time were often decorated with popcorn, candy, fruits and other homemade items – make your own salt dough ornament to take home!
• Discover your Civil War ancestors
and more at the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library! Search the Adjutant General lists, Ancestry.com and other resources.
• Read a Civil War journal kept by soldiers from both sides of the conflict and the letters of a Civil War soldier’s wife reporting on battles near her Kentucky home.
• Enjoy a 20% discount on holiday merchandise at the Stewart Home School 1792 Store.
• Explore the Kentucky Historical Society exhibits, “Civil War: My Brother, My Enemy,” “A Kentucky Journey” and “Toyota Kentucky Hall of Governors.”

5:30 p.m. – KHS Annual Meeting and
Kentucky History Awards at the Old State Capitol. This event recognizes individuals, groups and projects that promote preservation, awareness and appreciation of state and local history. Registration is free but must be received by Nov. 2. Please contact
