Feb 11, 201210:30amTracing Slavery and Slaveholding on the Kentucky FrontierWhat happens when a black woman researching her roots comes face to face with descendants of the people who enslaved her ancestors? Pam Smith, a Kentucky Humanities Council speaker, will describe the facts and feelings that surfaced when research led her to a university professor whose ancestors owned Smith’s enslaved great-great grandfather. Smith will also show people how to trace slavery and slaveholding in their family through pictures, oral histories, census and probate records, research trips and results from DNA testing. The presentation will conclude with a question and answer session.
Presented by KHS and the Kentucky Genealogical Society, the free
family history workshop series takes place each month at the Center for Kentucky History. Topics range from how to begin documenting your ancestry to specialized resources for experienced genealogists. If requested at the time of registration, an optional light lunch is available for $6, payable at the door.
